yesterday. even though the temperatures are about the same. clouds, and overnight. -- coming in overnight. then i saw wind moving cars. >> there are a few cars out there. but a problem of note in annapolis, u.s. 50 near jennifer road. a and elsewhere, pretty good. 55 miles an hour on the north side. everything looks good as well on the west side toward 70. so far, so good, on the jfx. out of the owings mills area -- and here is 50 at ritchie highway. flashing lights. we are waiting to hear what direction the accident is. southbound 95 toward the 895 split guest: overall moving well on most of the major roadways. we will let you know if any problems come in.

tram are big story is the finger-pointing continues on capitol hill this morning. new hope for a deal to avoid going off the fiscal cliff. if president obama will meet with congressional leaders later today. danielle leigh is in washington with more on the rush for a deal. >> president obama and congressional leaders need to make progress, and today's last met afternoon meeting at the white house could be a final opportunity. >> mcconnell seemed to give an indication that maybe, just maybe, the president might make a new offer giving -- getting toward the 11th-hour. >> off without a deal that cuts of the debt, taxes will go up on every worker next week. the extension to of unemployment benefits expires and deep spending cuts set in, threatening another recession. >> it really upsets me because the government is a blow to be working for the people and i don't see that. >> despite what is at stake,

senators came back early only to engage in another round of bickering. >> republicans have bent over backwards. we stepped way, way out of our comfort zone. >> we wanted an agreement. but we had no takers. >> we are in the same situation we have been in for a long time here. we can't negotiate with ourselves. >> house members were not even planning. there are still home. they will come back this sunday and work through the new year, if needed. >> i wish they'd hurry up and make a decision one way or the other. >> republicans say they will compromise on taxes but not more government spending. now the concern is both sides are giving too little, too late. the goal is to get a deal by midnight monday but a growing number of lawmakers doubt will happen. they say the soon as it can come would be january 3 when the new congress takes over.

danielle leigh, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a stalemate of another kind could paralyze shipping, for making a very difficult for goods to get into the area. port workers along the east coast could go on strike in just a few days. kim dacey joins us live from self baltimore with more on what it could mean for our area. >> ledgewood -- could be the biggest port strike along the eastern seaboard in 35 years. it would affect about 2000 workers in baltimore alone. about $55 billion of cargo a year goes in and the port and according to the port administration, 108,000 jobs linked to activities at the port. if negotiations between the maritime alliance and international longshoremen are not going well. unless an agreement is reached by midnight sunday, there would be a complete shutdown of all ports, from maine to texas. a report spokesperson said there is a possibility the strike would only be partial and would only affect cargo in containers because warranties for workers

of that type of cargo is the big sticking point. that could avoid a stoppage of automobile shipments and cruise ship operations. >> if containers remained to be the focal point, we think it could be a bit of an advantage for us because we do have other cargo. >> the port of baltimore announced they are planning to keep two public terminals open tomorrow to us -- allow as many trucks to come in and get picked up in case there is a strike. kim dacey, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a contract remains in a coma this morning after being beaten inside a house and west baltimore. authorities found 57- year-old 57pearson unconscious inside the home last week. family members say he had gone to get an estimate on contract work when he went missing. >> online note is that they rob him. -- all i know is that they rob

him. i hear about stuff like this on the news but i would never know it would come to my family during the holiday season. >> perason remains in serious but stable condition and the search for suspects continues. anyone with information is asked to call police. baltimore city police made an arrest in the shooting death of a 21-year-old baltimore man. it is the girlfriend who called 911 to report the shooting. back in august, asia cutler reportedly told police she found her book and bleeding from a gunshot wound in the park circle neighborhood of northwest baltimore. after investigating, police determined it was active but cutler who was the shooter. along with cutler, police arrested a 21-year-old shanda cure and willie brockington as excess of a spirited two weeks after the tragedy of sandy hook elementary and the topic of gun control as heated up. as talk of legislative action increases, so do gun sales.

gun sales across the nation of spiked as people fled gun stores to buy weapons that are legal now but may not be if new legislation passes. maryland is no exception. as the police say there were more than 7200 gun purchase applications filed in november. following the shooting in newtown, connecticut, those numbers appear to be spiking. >> we do not have numbers for december but we expect more than 8200 purchase applications to be processed. >> in 2011, more than 46,000 purchase application for processed and by the end of 2012, state police project at least 62,000 would be handled. the recent cold snap claimed its first casualty here in maryland. health officials say a frederick county man described only as at least 65 years old died of hypothermia sometime between december 18-24. state health officials are urging people to be prepared for the cold weather. they want you to cover your head, where layers of clothing and to keep your feet warm and dry.

>> welcome back to 11 news today. it is 39 degrees downtown. a live view from sky camera now. a few clouds in the sky but we should see a little sunshine later today. the sun will be rising closer to 730 this morning. temperatures across the state -- a little on the chilly side. upper 20's to the low 30's across the northern part. mid 30's across the southern part. a little cooler down near the patuxent river, and in the mountains, 20's from hancock toward oakland, one of the cold spots, 21. much less wind and it makes all the difference. we could still see when from the

northwest, 5-10 miles an hour or but yesterday gusts up to 50 and it really took a toll on the wind chill and caused minor damage. just seeing a few strong winds along with coast -- ocean city, if you go stronger but even those winds should be quieting down. expect sunshine in ocean city, temperatures around the low to mid 40's across central and southern maryland. seven pennsylvania, mid 30's and partly sunny and mostly cloudy in the mountains, a high of 30 to. they will see the clouds first coming in because of the approaching storm. we are watching it on the satellite and radar. notice of the ouds spreading into the east. right now is mostly just producing rain across louisiana, back into mississippi, and moving into tennessee as well. see the pink shades starting to pop up across kentucky? it is starting to indicate a little bit of ice on the northern edge, so we do have to watch out for the storm because

it will not just the rain and then. colder air will ensure we get a lift -- at least a little bit of snow. high pressure in control today. then the storm comes in and out of the south. the good news, we are only getting the northern french, which means it will not be as heavy. if the storm was coming right over us or to the west, we could see higher snow amounts but fortunately we are not -- watch out for travel delays in building a lead through the weekend and even into maine. let us put the futurecast in motion. it is never just a pure snow event for the maryland area, especially this time of year. it will start off as snow mainly across baltimore but notice how the rate increase in from a cell. but could be a changeover at some point which does cut down on accumulations and a kick out to sea later saturday afternoon. this is what we are expecting a far as speculation. baltimore metro, 1-3 inches,

complications. the hospital says the former president is in for a long recovery but as alert and comfortable. after getting out of commission for several weeks due to a stomach virus and concussion, secretary of state hillary clinton will be at work next week. doctors still grounded heard from overseas travel for several more weeks. she will be preparing to step down from a job for live next year. return also paves the way for testifying before congress on the whatever attack on the u.s. diplomatic office in benghazi. in this morning's consumer alert, after pending home sales reached their highest level in nearly six years, last month we will get an idea of the trend will continue later today. the national association of realtors will release the pending homes of index at 10:00 this morning measuring housing construct -- contract activity. where it has signed but has not yet closed. after being as commonplace as a

-- bloomberg businessweek report. it >> the fedor will reserve bank of the atlanta found people under water, a house worth less than the old, will be more likely to accept significantly lower pay than homeowners who are not under water. what they are finding is people in the situation to value jobs more, and that is because they are at risk of default and losing their homes. speaking of housing, monday is the deadline for eligible homeowners to request a free preview to see if they are due at a possible compensation. this is part of a huge foreclosure settlement last year between bank regulators and big bang, bankamerica, walls -- wells fargo. more than 4 million notices were mailed to people who are eligible but only 350,000 people actually asked for a review as of mid december. do you need incentive? the paper says compensation could range from a couple of hundred dollars to more than $100,000. the notices have been sent out. let's take a look at what is

quick look at the forecast, which includes snow. >> tomorrow includes snow but today it is quiet. 33 at the airport with winds west at 3 miles an hour. temperatures across the metro area -- 34 in pasadena. 33 in edgewood. highs in the upper 30's to the low 40's. much less win. it makes all the difference. and you will not have to worry about the concerns to to the strong winds yesterday. but the approaching storm could bring accumulating snow. i will have the snow map when we come back. >> the clock is ticking on the fiscal cliff. the deadline just four days away. the president has cut his vacation short and they will meet sunday for a rare session to negotiate a compromise. tracey mitchell joins us live. is there any progress to report?

>> they are still talking, so i guess we can call that progress, but no breakthrough. the president meeting with congressional leaders hoping to work out a last-minute deal. just days before the deadline, the president is calling congressional leaders to the white house. >> i have to be very honest, mr. president, i don't know to my mind how it can happen now. >> each side is challenging the other to act first. >> republicans are not about to write a blank check for anything senate democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. >> lawmakers in the house are heading back to washington for a rare sunday evening session to focus on the fiscal cliff. >> i would hope that we could come back here and reach a compromise, which has been so

difficult to do. >> without a deal, taxpayers would pay more, the government will spend less. economists to warn it can throw us into another recession. fears of going over the fiscal cliff has caused consumer confidence to tumble. some political observers do not think congress will reach a deal in the next few days. >> i think if we get to january 2 and we see the markets going down and constituents getting angry or anxious about their financial situation, you will see congress come to a deal a lot quicker. >> house lawmakers could be in session until january 2, and that is just a day before the new conference -- congress is sworn in. >> why would lawmakers with until after the deadline to come to an agreement? >> they can't seem to hammer out anything right now but if they do reach something before the deadline, they will have to raise taxes for many taxpayers but if they do it after the deadline -- if everything expires -- they will be seen as having cut taxes and that is the

distinction for many republicans. >> thank you so much. the maryland live casino at the wrong bill mills can save money on replacements lots because they will not need them again because they are a 24-hour operation. -- replacements locks. it happened with expansion of gambling last month. it is an idea that appeals to the management and the customer. >> opening 24 hours a day allows us to it and -- extend the entertainment all day long and all night long and all year long. >> i think it is great. it will bring more revenue into the state. i think it will be a win-win. but i think it is great. it makes it more like vegas. >> in addition, the bar of the casino will also be serving drinks around the clock.

table games are expected to arrive at all of the casino sometimes next month. the clock is ticking down on the time to make a deal before a huge strike of longshoremen all across the country. the walkout could affect ports from maine to texas and baltimore is not the exception. kim dacey is live at the port in south baltimore with all the details. >> this would be the largest port strike on the eastern seaboard in 35 years. 2004 workers here in baltimore say they will take to the picket line if an agreement is not reached by sunday. roughly $51 billion worth of cargo per year goes through the port of baltimore and according to the maryland port administration, 108,000 jobs are linked to the activities at the port. all of it is in jeopardy if a labor agreement between the u.s. maritime alliance and international longshoremen cannot be reached by midnight sunday. >> a total work stoppage means a

minimum of a million dollars a day. >> that would be the impact from maryland according to former congresswoman helen bentley. ec -- she says negotiations and not the one well and could lead to a complete shutdown of all the ports from maine to texas. baltimore is the nation that a number one port for handling farm and construction machinery, automobiles and light -- light trucks. also for export coal, imported salt and aluminum. many of the material that keeps commerce chugging along. >> there is talk the strike could only be partial and would only affect cargo containers because royalties for workers on that cargo is a big sticking point. it could avoid a stoppage in automobile shipments and cruise ship operations. >> if containers remained to be the focal point, we feel that would be a bit of an advantage for us because we do have other cargo. >> the port of baltimore and now

>> welcome back. in the headlines this morning -- a contract remains in a coma after being beaten inside a house in west baltimore. authorities say they found him unconscious inside a home where last week. family members say pearson had gone to give an estimate on contract work when he went missing. it remains in serious condition research is continuing for the suspect and anyone with information is asked to call baltimore city police.
